how is technology being used to solve major world problems?

Technology is consistently overused as a tool to continue our shallow, materialistic self-interests when it could easily be used to help change many of the world’s problems—-cure world hunger, clean up polluted waters, figure out ways to end strife and arguments between warring factions, etc. etc. There’s too much emphasis on attaching another unnescesary addition to an already unnescesary Iphone, making a toilet in Japan make constant swishing sounds so they don’t have to think about their own shit, or equally idiotic means. The Internet itself is perfect breeding ground for each of our own abuses of luxury and privilege, an activity that I (like so many others) am guility of, using it mostly to post an endless array of impermaneant musical interests…so don’t misconstrue this as a judgement, or if you must misconstrue it as such, at least know that I am criticizing myself as well.

The field of medicine is one area where technology is being used for the good of the universal collective as opposed to self-interest or the collective self-interests of overly-materialistic societies (or at least it is used for all societies, not just overly-materialistic societies such as ours). Does anyone know of any other ways technology is being implemented in an attempt to cure certain problems of the world? And if one just wants to talk medicine, any new developments in those fields? If so, please re-post this and tell me your thoughts.
